A Super Stock for Superbugs

My attitude when I’m writing your weekly Radar Report is that we are having a conversation — it’s almost like meeting you, except I can’t bump your elbow. Of course, in the old days I would have said “shake your hand,” but with the spread of bird flu and other contagious diseases, more and more people are refusing to shake hands with others. So the World Health Organization, funded in great part by your tax dollars, just came out with the suggestion that people should switch to the “elbow bump” in case of an epidemic. I am not making this...

Making Money in Molecules and Microcaps

The S&P 500 keeps rejecting the opportunity to break below 1260 and signal the start of a full-fledged bear market, even as the NASDAQ 100 finally edged above its bear market signal at 1675 today. So it’s a mixed, volatile, frustrating market for everyone right now, but I still think the next major move is down. One way to take advantage of these volatile swings is to sell cyclical stocks on up days and buy our new MegaShift recommendations on down days. We’ve had a week to get into the Biogen Idec LEAPs (stock: BIIB LEAPs: OIY AI) that I...

MobilePro (MOBL) began as a developer of integrated mobile communications systems for professionals. They make custom portable devices for various applications, integrated with wireless data features, and offer Internet wireless portal and wireless service access, the latter sometimes with a partner. They’ve learned a lot about wireless networks in the process, and now contract to set up municipal WiFi networks. At this point, the company has three divisions: MobilePro Internet is the original business, developing products for wireless data applications and operational support services like wireless network monitoring and testing. Through an acquisition they also are an Internet Service Provider...

Sell Lexar

They blew it. Lexar (LEXR) was supposed to report $225.6 million in sales and four cents a share for the December quarter, and guide for at least $202.9 million and a penny a share in the seasonally weaker first quarter. The best Wall Street analyst on the stock was expecting an upside surprise, with $233 million in sales and six cents a share, followed by guidance for four cents in the March quarter. I was looking for even better revenues over $235 million, with seven or even eight cents in earnings. As late as yesterday morning, one of my Silicon...

Going Back to the Well for More Profits

Although I am still quite negative on the market, I am as positive as ever that our MegaShifts will substantially outperform this year. And, as I have said before, biotech is going to be one of the best sectors in 2006. We already have solid holdings in four biotechs that I feel have the capabilities to offer solid profits from effective drugs. And now I want to make the pot a little sweeter. Last week, I mentioned that I was completing the work on a couple of new biotech buy recommendations. Well, I’ve finished the job on the first one,...

Say Good Bye to Legacy Stocks

The big news this week was the changing of the guard at the Fed. It turned out to be completely anticlimactic as Chairman Al went out with a whimper, or whatever the Fed equivalent of “no drama” is, by raising the Fed funds rate another quarter-point again on Tuesday to 4.5% and dropping the “measured” code word from his statement that meant: “We’re going to keep doing this.” He did say things that continue to muddy the policy outlook with vague phrases like: “Some further policy firming may be needed.” I assume the futures markets are correct that incoming Chairman...
