I suspect the shorts in Arena have mostly covered. With the momentum traders gone, the stock should start a news-driven rise. In his CNBC interview yesterday, CEO Jack Lief hinted at a higher price per pill than I am using when he said to think about the cost of a venti latte in...

Flash Alert – Lorcaserin Approved! – 6.27.12

Jun 12
Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA) received approval for lorcaserin this morning, now trade-named Belviq, not Lorqess. The company held a conference call that just ended. The label will recommend that patients should discontinue Belviq if they have not achieved 5% weight loss at 12 weeks. In the BLOOM and BLOSSOM trials, 42% do achieve the 5% weight loss. In BLOOM-DM, 32% of Type II diabetics achieved that weight loss. In practice, I think obesity doctors will add phentermine for patients that don’t achieve the 5% hurdle, and only give up on Belviq if BelPhen doesn’t work for them. In any case, I...

I don’t think much is going to happen between writing this and the close, and I have an appointment after the close. With the current board approaching 400 comments, I decided to get this out. The minutes of the May 10 Advisory Committee meeting closely follow the Chairman’s summary on each of the questions. It’s a fair summary in that sense, but the transcript is what the FDA looks at. The FDA is...

It didn’t take long for the shorts to run the stops in Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA) after I mentioned the possibility on Thursday. Shortly after Friday opened, there was a high-volume dump that crashed the stock to $7.80. Click for larger graphic Institutions or hedge funds that want to take profits just feed their stock out into the market in order to maximize their proceeds. They don’t throw it all on the market at once, then let the falling price hit the stop losses of hapless investors, and then buy it back at the bottom. As you can see from the...

Radar Report – 6.21.12

Jun 12
Dear New World Investor: Yesterday, the Federal Reserve said [emphasis added]: “Information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in April suggests that the economy has been expanding moderately this year. However, growth in employment has slowed in recent months, and the unemployment rate remains elevated. Business fixed investment has continued to advance. Household spending appears to be rising at a somewhat slower pace than earlier in the year. Despite some signs of improvement, the housing sector remains depressed. Inflation has declined, mainly reflecting lower prices of crude oil and gasoline, and longer-term inflation expectations have remained stable. “Consistent...
