Radar Report – 8.30.12

Dear New World Investor: Here we are at the end of August, the time I expected to be selling some stocks to hunker down for the recession I expect next year. The seasonality pattern in Presidential years says to sell: Click for larger graphic The Economic Cycles Research Institute Weekly Leading Indicator says to sell: Click for larger graphic But we can’t sell. We have to wait for an academic who has never managed so much as a Burger King to speak at 10:00am ET on Friday, because we might miss a monster rally as he floods the U.S. economy...

Radar Report – 8.23.12

Dear New World Investor: The average gasoline price rose to $3.74 this week, capping seven straight weeks of increases. But I think gasoline could sell for less than $2.50 a gallon in 2013, implying oil prices under $50 a barrel. There will be two reasons for that. The first is the recession I’m predicting, which lowers both industrial and consumer demand for oil and gasoline. The second is something I’ve been tracking for several months: An unexpected and potentially very large increase in the supply of domestic oil – the traditional sweet, light crude that provided the low-cost driver for...

I suspect the move in Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA) today is related to an announcement of a European partner. But that could be as vague as some company (e.g, Roche) getting a “now-or-never” call from an investment banker that another company (e.g., Glaxo) is about to sign a deal, and the news leaked. Europe in August is not a hot spot for deals, so we may not hear anything until after Labor...

Flash Alert – RTK From Hold to Buy – 8.10.12

Rentech (RTK) did $70.7 million in revenues, below the $81.9 million consensus, as I reported in yesterday’s Radar Report. However, they did meet the consensus forecast for four cents a share. On today’s conference call, they attributed the revenue miss to the timing of product deliveries, and said higher gross margins let them hit the bottom line. For Rentech Nitrogen (RNF), favorable weather conditions in March allowed farmers in its core market area of the mid-Corn Belt to apply spring ammonia earlier than usual. This shifted meaningful volumes of ammonia deliveries into the March quarter that had been anticipated to...
